Get Plarning!

The patterns below are intended for volunteers who want to:

  • (a) learn how to create plarn–plastic yarn–by upcycling grocery bags to contribute to volunteers creating crocheted market bags
  • (b) learn how to create market bags out of plarn to donate to raise funds for the sea turtles
  • (c) all of the above!

Included in this packet you will find illustrated instructions for:

  • Creating the plarn
  • Crocheting with plarn
  • Pattern to create the market bag

Drop off your finished plarn (minimum 100 ft) and/or completed market bags at the following locations:

  • Salt Marsh Market | 100 Charlie Medlin Dr, Surf City, NC 28445
  • Holly Ridge Community Center | 404 Sound Rd, Holly Ridge, NC 28445

And, crocheters, don’t forget to complete the tag for your finished bag!

Thanks for contributing to removing plastic waste from our oceans and landfills.

Did you know? Sea turtles can see plastic grocery bags floating in the ocean and think that they’re jellyfish–a source of nutrition–and consume the plastic. This can lead to many digestive issues and even death.
